Four members of a single family have been detained in Kolkata for allegedly possessing both Indian and Bangladeshi passports, in violation of citizenship laws. The Security Control Organisation (SCO) identified the accused as Vijay Modi, his wife Kaushalya Modi, and their sons Dilip Modi and Ashish Modi. An FIR has been registered against them, and they have been taken into custody for questioning. The family had entered India legally using Bangladeshi visas and later settled in the Palm Avenue area of South Kolkata.
Officials stated that although the family’s visas expired, they continued to reside in India. During this time, they allegedly procured forged Indian documents such as Aadhaar cards and voter identity cards, which were later used to obtain Indian passports. The SCO began investigating the family after discovering that they had not returned to Bangladesh despite visa expiry. Preliminary findings confirmed that the family was residing in India using fraudulent Indian identity documents while retaining their Bangladeshi citizenship.
In a separate but related incident, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) recently arrested a Pakistani national, identified as Azad Malik. Investigations revealed that his real name is Azad Hussain and that he had acquired Bangladeshi citizenship through forged documentation before entering India illegally. He was allegedly residing in Kolkata under the false identity of Azad Malik and had obtained multiple forged Indian documents, including voter IDs, a driving licence, and birth certificates.
According to officials, two fake voter ID cards, several counterfeit driving licences, and four fake birth certificates were recovered from Malik at the time of arrest. A bank account in his name containing ₹2.62 crore was also discovered and frozen. Authorities are examining possible links between the two cases, with ongoing investigations into potential networks facilitating illegal cross-border movement and the creation of fake documents.
